Ceramic composite materials have exceptional high temperature resistance and strength. These qualities make ceramic composites a highly productive and stable cutting tool material that can survive the extreme cutting conditions required to process high-temperature superalloys and other difficult-to-machine materials. The most well-known ceramic composites for cutting heat-resistant superalloys are whisker-reinforced ceramics. Reinforced whisker ceramic inserts first introduced 30 years ago and soon dominated the market, with ten times the productivity of carbide cutting tools. Ceramic tools could not cut heat-resistant superalloys at the time because they lacked whisker reinforcing support. Since then, with the advancement of whisker improvement technology, ceramic tools have demonstrated exceptional performance when cutting tough materials.
